A new PR – FOR 5!

Week 5 of the Meathead Challenge is just about upon us, and I have some great news! For starters, I got a pleasant surprise when one of my clients arrived with a 2L carton of Homo Milk for me :D

Meathead Milk

I had missed out on my milk in the morning, so how perfect was that?! Thanks Sylvia!

I had a pretty busy day, 7 clients, a couple short breaks filled with errands, and an appointment to check out an apartment. So my lifting had to get pushed to the evening. After work I grabbed the midge, and headed over to Alchemy to get our lifting started.

Today on my plate, was a 315lbs Squat, a 265lbs Bench, and a 195lbs Power Clean. Squats were up first.

315lbs has been the most I’ve ever squatted. At last year’s Crossfit Total meet on my 3rd attempt I nailed 315 for 1. I felt though that I could’ve done another couple reps, but for a 1RM contest that doesn’t really help ya haha. At the beginning of the meathead challenge, learning this new way of squatting, and forcing my extremely unflexible shoulders into position made me drop my working weight down to a tiny 195. But downing 2600 calories of Milk a day, and adding 10lbs a workout, it wasn’t long before I was getting my numbers higher than I’ve ever had before. Today came my best yet, 315lbs. It went up like nothing. Felt great! 3 sets of 5 at a weight that used to be my max.

Bench and Power Clean were up next, coupled together. On Friday my bench at 255 was easy, so naturally I thought 265 wouldn’t be all that bad. However I was wrong haha. 265 felt heavy as shit right off the rack! I got 3 clean reps out, a 4th got up, but if I had to guess I think the 4th took me 30 seconds to get up, and there was no chance in hell for a 5th. The second and third set I dropped down to 255 hoping to finish with 2 sets of 5, but I guess the hard push with 265 drained me quite a bit. I ended up getting 4 plus 1 negative and then 3 plus 2 negative (or the way I wrote it into my log book “5ish”). Power cleans also felt easy last week. I tried for 195 and laughed as it barely passed my belly button before swinging out infront of me. Terrible technique for sure. Reset, and tried again. I managed to get my 3 sets of 3 for the cleans. Oddly enough too, was that the first rep of each sucked, second wasn’t bad, and the third was perfect.

3 more weeks to go and we’re gonna test our 1RMs. I’m totally stoked! I should be putting up some crazy awesome numbers. And for now, I’ll leave you fine folks with the first set of my squats.
