Short term (days to weeks) hyperglycemia (high blood glucose levels) can lead to increased urination, increased thirst, weight loss, blurred vision, fatigue, nausea, and can also lead to many fungal and bacterial infections.More serious complications include diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) or hyperosmolar hyperglycemic nonketotic syndrome (HHNKS).
Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), also known as diabetic coma, occurs when the body lacks insulin and breaks down fats for energy. When this occurs the body produces ketones which can be found in the urine.Ketoacidosis occurs when the body does not get rid of all the ketones in the urine and they build up in the blood. This is a life-threatening situation and needs immediate treatment.DKA is associated with blood glucose levels from 200-2,000mg/dL.Symptoms of DKA include unexplained blood glucose greater than 250mg/dL, fruity smelling breath, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, low blood pressure, shortness of breath, dehydration, increased heart rate, shock, and coma.Medical assistance is needed from hospital staff.Treatment includes insulin infusions, fluid replacement, and potassium replacement.
Hyperosmolar hyperglycemic non-ketotic syndrome (HHNKS) can be life-threatening and is associated with blood glucose levels greater than 600mg/dL.Symptoms of HHNKS include dehydration, excessive thirst, low blood pressure, glucose in the urine but no ketones, hallucinations, sensory deficits, rapid eye movements, paralysis on one side of the body, loss of vision in half of the visual field, seizures, and a partial or total loss of the ability to comprehend spoken or written language and express ideas.Medical assistance is needed from hospital staff.Treatment also includes fluid replacement, potassium replacement, and insulin infusions.
Blood sugar concentration, or glucose level, refers to the amount of glucose present in the blood of a human or animal. Normally, in mammals the blood glucose level is maintained at a reference range around 90 mg/dl, equivalent to 5mM (mmol/l) (since the molecular weight of glucose, C6H12O6, is about 180 g/mol).
This is a post for curiosity. Just in case, in the off chance, that something so incredibly odd as losing your insulin supply while visiting another country but still being within driving distance of your home should happen – you now know that it makes THE MOST POSSIBLE SENSE to just drive the fuck home, AND THEN use your insulin from home OR as soon as you cross the border get it from a hospital/pharmacy.
What you DO NOT want to do, is leave your hotel room at 6:30am in a hunt for prescription medication, without a prescription, in a country with horrible healthcare, carrying only $120 cash on you, and not telling the people you were there with what the fuck was going on.
Not that this kind of ABSOLUTELY RETARDED situation would EVER happen, because no living human being (or dog, cat, turtle, and pigeon) could ever do such a stupid thing. Correct?… You’d think so anyway…
Holy sweet mother! I cannot believe how smart some people are. Training and working at Alchemy Crossfit I get to meet a tonn of awesome people! Two that really stand out are Dan Petz and Aras Kvedaras.
Aras is a chiropractor and active release therapist, and Dan is a massage and active release therapist. These guys are GENIUS’S. Kvedaras Chiropractic is truly the place to go if you’re serious about your body.
They both workout hard, and understand the demands most athletes put on their bodies. Not like most doctors and massage therapists that sit on their asses, with the closest thing to a workout being the biceps curls of their diet coke.
I went to see Dan, not becuase of an injury, but because he was curious if he could figure out a problem he saw in me that he regularly sees in fighters.
My shoulders roll forward, and my posture is horendous. Dan figured he knew the culprit and wanted to have at it. Turns out it was actually a rather simple fix – simple yet would have gone unseen by any of these other so called “experts”.
My lats were basically non-functioning. Everything else was picking up the slack, he was actually impressed I could even do a pull up. Which also explains why my back rounds during deadlifts even when the weight isn’t overly heavy.
A loose joint somewhere around my collarbone also causes some problems. Pressing against that joint gave me all my strength back. It was hilarious to see how he could move my arm with 1 finger, then while pressing on that loose joint he couldn’t budge it with all his weight.
Then it gets even freakier. He busts open a magnesium capsule and pours some into my hand. Has me lick it, and tests me again. My lats are working…
I was damn confused. Apparently magnesium is needed to absord calcium. Without it the calcium ends up building up and gives a similar result as having adhesions and scar tissue throughout the muscle.
With the little bit of magnesium my mouth, my body thinks it has enough and I get my strength back for a few minutes. So all I have to do is start supplementing with magnesium and my dead lats are back! I’m pumped! This means my deadlift, pull ups, and even bench should go up HUGE in the next few weeks.
No matter your level, whether you’re a professional athlete, or a stay at home parent, there’s no reason not to be functioning at your highest level. These guys will fix you up the fastest and most efficient way. They’re not your weekly appointment kind of people. They find the problem, fix it, clean up the mess that problem caused, and then teach you how to rehab and prehab.
A Bulgarian strength training bag to be exact – a great training tool, initially created for wrestlers.
I came across a post somewhere (pretty sure it was on Zach Even-Esh’s site) on how to make your own home version of this wicked piece of training equipment. I had owned the real thing a while back, but failed to use it all that much, and decided to sell ‘er to a friend. However now I want to start using it again, so here I am blogging about making my own, and I suggest to any/all fighters, wrestlers, and crossfitters out there to make one yourself.
Total cost is under $50. Here’s what you need:
inner tube for a car tire
bag of sand
zip ties
duct tape
exacto-knife
Start out by cutting out a small section of the tube.
Next up, grab a zip tie and your duct tape. Twist the end of the tube and cinch on a zip tie about 4-6 inches from the end. Tightly wrap the end in duct tape, making it into a handle.
Now get your sand, and start filling! I added about 7-10lbs of lead shot in with the sand for some added weight. You should be able to get about half of a 66lbs bag of sand into the tube.
Now cap off the open end the same way you did the first, zip tie it shut and duct tape the fuck outa it!
And there you have it!
My finished bag weighed in at 52lbs. I’ll put this little guy to the test tomorrow, see how she holds up. The whole procedure took me about 15 minutes, it took longer to buy the materials. And should I want to build another, all I need is the inner tire – I have enough left over tape, zip ties, and sand for a second bag no problem.
Hope you all have fun playing with your bag! I know I will!
